There are 3 ways to delete those temporary files.

1. Delete 'Temp' files

  • Open the 'Run' command box. To do so, either you can search it by typing Run in the search box OR press the Windows+R keys simultaneously from the keyboard.

  • After that, you will see the Run dialog box on your screen. Now type temp in the search box.

  • After you click on the 'OK' button. Then you will see a new window of temp files on your screen. Now, on that window, we have to delete the temp files.

  • To do so, first of all, press the Ctrl+A keys simultaneously to select all the files.
  • After that press, the Shift+Delete keys simultaneously to delete the temp files permanently.

  • Once the deletion of the files complete. Now close the Window of temp files.


2. Delete some other 'temp' files

  • To delete some other 'temp' files. Again we have to open the Run dialog box. To open the 'Run' dialog box, follow the same procedure which is mentioned above.
  • But this time we have to type '%temp%' in the Run search box. After that, you will see a new window of temporary files on your screen.

  • And now press the Ctrl+A keys simultaneously to select all the files.
  • Now it`s time to delete these files by pressing the Shift+Delete keys simultaneously. And then you will see a prompt of Folder Access Denied on your screen.
  • On this prompt, first, check the Do this for all current items box. And after checking the box click on the Skip button.

  • Then again you will see a prompt of File in Use on your screen. Then again you have to check the Do this for all current items box. And then click on the Skip button.

  • After the deletion of the files complete then close that window.


3. Delete prefetch files

  • Now to delete 'Prefetch' files. Again open the 'Run' dialog box.
  • And this time you have to type prefetch in the Run search box.

  • After you click on the 'OK' button then you will see a prompt on your screen where you have to click on the Continue button.

  • Again you will see a new window on your screen where you have to select all the files by pressing the Ctrl+A keys simultaneously.
  • After all the files selected, now, it`s time to delete all the selected files by pressing the Shift+Delete keys simultaneously.

  • After you click on the "Skip" button then the deletion of the files gets complete.

Note: Please don`t try to delete the files which are not deleting. Because deleting those files may crash your system.


2) Optimize your Drives

The method of Optimizing your drives will help you a lot to speed up Windows 10.

There are two ways through which you can optimize all your drives.

#1 Optimize drives from This PC

  • The first step is to click on 'This PC'. After you click on the 'This PC' then you will see a new window on your screen where you will see all the drives which are connected to your computer.
  • Now, you have to right click on the drive which you want to Optimize and then click on Properties.

  • After that click on the Tools button. And then there you have to click on the Optimize button.

  • After you click on the Optimize button then you will see a new window on your screen where you have to select the drive which you want to optimize. In my case, I`m going to optimize my C: drive.
  • So, you have to select your drive and then click on the Analyze button first. After the analyzing process finished. Now you have to click on the Optimize button to start the optimization.

  • The optimization process will take some time. So, wait some time and sit aside.
  • Once the Optimization process finishes, then close that window.

#2 Optimize Drives from Settings

This way of optimizing drives is exactly the same as we have done above but in this method, we will optimize drives from the Settings.

  • For this method, we have to open Settings first. To do so, search for Settings and then click on the Settings app.

3) Delete Previous Windows installation files

  • Then click on the System option.
  • After that select the Storage option from the list.
  • And then will see Configure Storage Sense or run it now and you have to click on the Configure Storage Sense option.

  • After you click on the Configure Storage Sense button then you will see a new interface on your screen. And there you will see the Free Up Space option. You have to click on the Clean Now button which is present below the Free Up Space option.

4) Update your System

Sometimes Windows 10 slows down because of not getting proper updates. Now, this doesn't mean that Microsoft does not send regular updates.

In fact, Microsoft continuously releases updates to fix minor bugs that affect the device`s performance.

Please regularly check for Windows 10 updates. So, let`s start with the process that how you can check for updates.
  • Open the Windows menu and search for Windows update.

5) Disable Start-up apps

So, we are going to disable those startup apps which are of no use.

  • To disable startup apps, we have to first open Task manager. To open task manager either you can use the shortcut key which is Ctrl+Alt+Delete OR you can open Task Manager by right click on the Taskbar.

  • When you will click on the Start-up button then you will see all the apps which start automatically in the background when you boot your system. Now we have to disable those start-up apps. But remember, don`t disable the programs whose publisher is Microsoft. Because disabling those programs may affect your computer.

  • Now select the program which you want to disable and then click on the disable button. I am disabling Wondershare Studio so I will select the Wondershare studio and then click on the disable button.

  • After you click on the Disable button then your selected program will get disabled and then it will not start and run in the background.

Note: Please don`t disable the programs whose publisher is Microsoft corporation. Don`t disable the programs which are highlighted in the image below because the highlighted programs are of Microsoft Corporation.

6) Run Disk Cleanup

Running Disk Cleanup also improves your Windows speed. And Disk Cleanup will also help you to speed up Windows 10.

Disk cleanup is Microsoft corporation built-in utility. And disk cleanup help you to clean your temporary files such as thumbnails, images.

To know how you can run disk cleanup, follow the below steps:
  • Open the Windows menu and search for Disk Cleanup and then click on the Disk Cleanup program.

  • After you click on the Disk Cleanup then you will see a pop-up on your screen where you have to select your drive which you want to clean. In my case, I`m selecting the C: drive to clean. You can choose any drive to clean.

  • After you click on the OK button then you will see a prompt on your screen. And on that prompt, you have to click on the Delete Files.

Once the deletion of the files completes. Now you`re ready to go on the other process.


7) Uninstall unused Software

Sometimes the user installs some software which he never uses. So, we must delete unused software from our computer system.

Because that unused software affects our computer`s performance.

Now let`s find out how you can delete unused software from your computer.
  •  Open the Windows menu and search for Control Panel and then open Control Panel.

  • After that, on the Control Panel, you will see so many options. But there you have to click on the Programs option.

  • After you click on the Program and Features button then you will see a new window on your screen from where you can uninstall that software which you do not use. In my case, I`m uninstalling Realtek High Definition Audio Driver.

  • After you click on the Uninstall button then you will see a prompt on your screen where you have to click on the Yes button to start the uninstalling.
Wait until the uninstalling process finishes. As the process finishes, then you can proceed to the next process to speed up Windows 10.

8) Disable Transparency Effects

Transparency effects also affect the computer`s performance. So, in this process, we`re going to disable the Transparency effects.



  • Right click on your desktop and then click on Personalize option.

  • After you click on the Personalize button then you will see a new window on your screen. On that window, you will see a list of option but you have to select the Colors option.

  • In the colors option, you will see an option which is transparency effects. If it is enabled then you have to disable it.

9) Upgrade Your RAM (Random Access Memory)

The performance of the computer system also depends on RAM (Random Access Memory). RAM is a very important factor in which a computer`s performance depends.

So, if you want to improve your Computer`s performance then increase your RAM.

Before you install one more RAM on your Computer system, check twice that which RAM type your computer supports.

If your computer supports DDR4 then purchase and install DDR4 RAM.

But if your system supports DDR3 RAM then you have to install the DDR3 RAM type.


10) Use an SSD

SSD stands for Solid State Drive. Generally, people use HDD (Hard Disk Drive) in their computer system. Because HDD is cheaper than SSD.

But if we talk about the difference in the performance of HDD and SSD then SSD performs much better than HDD.

Even though the SSD is much expensive than the HDD. But if you use an SSD in your computer system then you will see a very massive difference in your computer`s performance.


11) Check Drive Errors

Sometimes we see a variation in the computer`s performance due to errors in Drive.

So, check for drive errors regularly. To know how you can check for drive errors, follow the below steps.

  • Open This PC first. And then select the drive in which you want to check for driver errors.
  • I`m going to check errors on my C: drive. So select your drive, right click on that drive and then click on Properties.

  • After you click on the Properties then you will see a pop-up on your screen where you will see a Tab with name Tools. You have to select Tools Tab.

  • On the Tools tab, you will see two options on your screen which are checking the driver for errors and Optimizing the drive. But you have to click on the Check button because we have to checker drive for error. And we have already optimized the drive in the above procedures.

  • After you click on the Check button then the error checking will start on your selected drive.

  • After the disk checking completes. Then, if your drive has no errors you will see a message of Your drive was successfully scanned. No errors were found.

If you see a message like No errors were found then your drive has no errors.


12) Disable Background Apps

Sometimes your system`s speed decreases because of the apps which are running in the background.

So, disabling background apps may speed up Windows 10.

  • Open the Windows menu and search for Settings. Then click on the Settings app to open it.
  • After that click on the Privacy option.

  • After you open the Privacy option, then on the left side scroll down and then click on the Background apps option.

13) Reset your PC

If none of the other ways work then you can speed up Windows 10 by resetting your PC.

Please note that if you want to reset your PC completely then save your data before resetting it. Because complete reset will delete all your files and programs and you will get a freshly installed version of Windows 10.

  • Open the Windows menu and search Settings. Then open settings.
  • Then click on the Update & Security option.
